Looking at his calendar in mid-December 2005, Adrian Ivinson saw that he had roughly three
weeks to prepare for an important meeting with his boss, Dr. ]oseph Martin, Dean of the Harvard
Medical School (HMS). Ivinson was the Director of the Harvard Center for Neurodegeneration and
Repair (HCNR). The purpose of the upcoming January 2006 meeting was to review the progress of
HCNR and, more importantly, discuss how Ivinson planned to address certain key organizational,
leadership and fundraising challenges in the coming year.
Background
HCNR was started in late 2000 with a gift of $37.5 million from an anonymous donor. The donor
mandated that HCNR conduct research which could lead to actual treatments for
neurodegenerative disease patients and that it do so by encouraging collaboration among
neurological researchers in the HMS community.
When Ivinson first joined HCNR in ]une of 2001, there was little organization or structure. The
center consisted of a somewhat balkanized collection of functional research initiatives, each
supervised by a separate research leader within the HMS community. Ivinson helped transform
HCNR into an integrated and tightly managed research center which became a catalyst for
groundbreaking research and collaboration between hospitals and neurological researchers in the
broader HMS community.
In addition, he moved to build and develop HCNR’s drug discovery lab, the only academic lab of
its kind in the United States and a key to HCNR’s mission of translating basic research into
treatments for disease. Ivinson also developed the center’s optical imaging, clinical trials and other
world-class facilities which created a venue and an incentive for HMS researchers to collaborate,
adopt new technology and expand their research. HCNR worked to create multiple forums for
members of the research community to meet and ultimately c: See the attached PDF.
