how politics influences human relationships in The Blue Kite.

Use the type of human relationship analyzed in your paper#3 as a basis, compare it with another type of human relationship represented in The Blue Kite. Another option is to compare it with a similar or different type of relationship represented in one of the four stories: “Rotten Egg,” “Cats,” “Fire,” and “Mayor Yin.”
[When you compare two types of human relationship, you can compare their similarities or differences, or you can discuss both their similarities and differences (for example, P & Q share these similarities, but they differ in some other ways).] Whenever possible, try to emphasize the way(s) the director portrays or represents how politics influences relationships.

Automotive cruise control system

Automotive Cruise Control System have been developed in order to improve safety and comfort for vehicle occupants. A system (also known as adaptive, active or autonomous cruise control) uses a number of sensors in order to provide the information to an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) regarding the distance to a vehicle in front. According to this information and an ECU algorithm, a vehicle a equipped with such system will maintain the desirable distance to a car in front with the required dynamic response to a sensor’s signal.
Write an introduction to the history of the development of Automotive Cruise Control Systems and principle of operation of these systems. Provide example of such systems used on vehicles.
An automotive intelligent cruise control system is shown in figure. For this system:
1) Determine the close-loop transfer function;
2) What values of the controller gain, k, will give the close-loop system the following characteristics:
a) The damping ration of 0.7;
b) The peak overshoot of a step of 15%;
c) Settling time of 4 seconds within 2% accuracy of the steady-state value for a system with the damping ratio 0.7
3) What will be the steady-state error of the system to a unit step?
4) Use the Routh-Hurwitz method to determine the value of K for which the system will be stable;

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS
ANSWER THE QUESTION
AVOID PLAGIARISM
USE REFERENCES ( in- essay citing and as bibliography list)
In-essay citing
According to Jones (1994). Direct quotation: “ text you are quoting “ (Dicken, 2004, pp44 ). Author quoted by other author ( Marx in Dicken, 2004, pp44)

SHOW KNOWLEDGE OF LECTURES, RECOMMENDED READINGS AND READING PACKAGE.
Showing knowledge of the lectures and course readings is essential to pass. This knowledge should be more than descriptive (i.e just citing the lectures or parts of a reading) You need to go further and use your knowledge of the literature to build informed arguments and analyse the issues raised by the question. Readings will provide you theories, concepts, arguments, findings and lessons from history. You need to analyse them and use them to organise your discussion. On the other hand showing knowledge of lectures and readings does not mean that you cannot have a sceptical attitude towards them. Do not be afraid to disagree or challenge the readings perspective, but be prepared to support your ideas with informed arguments.
EVIDENCE, EXAMPLES, FIGURES,
‘To be convincing any academic argument must be an informed argument. This does not mean that you have to cram every fact and figure that you have acquired from your reading into the body of your essay. It does mean, however that you need to support you major claims and arguments by showing the reader the evidence upon which they are based. Much of this evidence may be open to several interpretations, so you should try to demonstrate why the particular argument you are making is preferable to other interpretations. Usually one or two good examples will suffice to demonstrate a generally accepted point of view, but a more contentious argument will require more detailed information’. (Essay writing and referencing guide, School of Management, 2009-2010, pp 4)
BE ANALITICAL
Do not rely in one source. Compare and contrast perspectives. ‘The more you depend in one source the more likely you are to simply replicate the ideas those authors offer. The more you advance in the degree the more widely and deeply you will have to read in order to address the issues raised in assignments’. (Essay writing and referencing guide, School of Management, 2009-2010, pp6)

Critically discuss the view that capital markets created the conditions that led to the ‘new economy’ bubble and the banking crisis.

Essays – Analysis and Structure
In planning your essay it is valuable to consider several issues:
• Decide on your answer to the question or your point of view before you begin. That is, interpret the set question insightfully with both full understanding of its context and implications and an appreciation of its various dimensions and issues.
• Include an analysis or description of relevant theories and concepts, blend them with (only) relevant evidence and cases, and support your view with theoretical understanding, evidence and cases.
• To achieve this objective, you must plan your analytical structure carefully and be in a position to establish links between its different sections. That is, do not lose the thematic thread that unites the various aspects of your essay, and ensure that your use of theory, concepts, models, evidence and analytical structure lead you towards the answer you have already determined.
• To decide upon the core of your structure, that is the key points of your assignment or examination answer, you must be well read and knowledgeable about the relevant major topics on the course.

One possible answer structure is:
• Introduction. Suggest an answer to the question and outline how you intend to validate your suggested answer by clarifying the analytical structure (and maybe, therefore, the thematic thread or point of view you will pursue).
• Describe the key theories, concepts, models, and/or debates, and/or areas of critique surrounding the question. Keep this section as short as possible: you need to state the main concepts but you need greater space to do more in order to acquire higher order marks. Try and establish a link with your structure (in themes and ideas) and the following sections.
• Key point 1: employ empirical information and quote cases as examples to bring the academic evidences into reality.
• Key point 2: try to engage your analysis of the theories, concepts, models and other critical points to your examples and your own opinion (your voice is important when supported by evidences from the literature).
• Do you need an extra section that pulls the previous sections together or a section that follows logically from your separate conclusions you make amongst the key points? You may, for example, have analysed late development characteristics, but might now look at one of the large implications, such as which theories, concepts or models are more inclined to explain your findings.
• Are there other aspects of the debate that needed to be added, which could not be easily fitted into the structure, but nevertheless remain relevant? Or are there important debates you feel are ignored by the question? For example, you may have analysed the ‘classic’ five forces of Porter, but now need to question its relevance in the global world. You could discuss any other aspects from the literature which you find relevant, but then look at the implications of globalization for any analysis that might be relevant to your final approach in answering the question.
• Conclusion. If possible, after summarising your answer, discuss other aspects of the debate needing investigation, or assess the reliability of current evidence and research.

Industry/Product Life Cycle.

Select a product or an industry (not one from the textbook or one from class or one that team research is being done on). Describe the industry or product. Identify what stage it is in the Life Cycle (i.e. Introduction, Growth, Maturity, or Decline) and explain what evidence there is that it is in that stage of the life cycle. Based on your analysis explain what strategy you would you adapt (cost leadership, focus, differentiation, or mixed)? Explain why? What kinds of actions would you take to implement the strategy? What kinds of results would you expect and why?

Revision Great Arizona

Paper instructions:
Linda Gordon, a renowned historian at the University of Wisconsin, in her groundbreaking book, Great Arizona Orphan Abduction, recreates history, giving accounts of the struggles of American Mexican immigrants of the 1900s. Using various range regarding research skills including evidence produced from real excerpts from the time and court proceedings, Gordon creates a vivid view of the plight faced by the church and its leaders in the 1900s. She tried to restrain the people from thinking along racial lines and descending into what is now worldwide abhorred vice, of racial and ethnic discrimination[1]. This paper is a book review of Gordon’s book stating by describing the central theme of the book and discussing the various mechanics and writing styles used by the author in the book. The review will then conclude with an assessment of not only the quality of the written work but also the strength and relevance of the central message carried by the book.

Analysis of the everyday

Paper instructions:
In this paper you will apply the frame of the sociology of everyday life to the examination of an experience in your own life that connects with one of the themes covered in the course. You will explore the way this event was social constructed using concepts from the course and the texts. This paper should be written in the form of an essay, making an argument and supporting it with empirical data (including your own experience) and analysis. You will use the two textbooks for the course to deepen the analysis and support your case.
You will use the tools of critical reflection to apply concepts and methods from the course to an event from your own life. Patti Clayton, an expert on critical reflection, created the DEAL model of tools for reflection papers. In this model, the critical reflection involves three parts: 1) Documentation (wherein you objectively and richly describe a specific incident); 2) Examination (wherein you analyze the events documented in your reflection’s first part by applying key concepts); and 3) the Articulation of Learning (wherein you discuss what you have learned through your examination and the critical reflection process).
Start by thinking of an actual incident from your own life that relates to one of the weekly themes of this course (e.g. inequality, health, encounters with bureaucracy, etc.). For the paper, you should describe the incident, using empirical data to let a reader know what actually happened as objectively as possible with minimal interpretation. Then you should examine the incident, taking it apart and using concepts from the course to figure out and explain what happened and why. Finally, you should say something about what you learned through doing this, including some sense of discovery and figuring things out.
The paper as a whole should be written in the form of an essay, beginning with an introduction that lays out the project of the paper and makes a case for your analysis. The introduction should be followed by a descriptive section with an emphasis on empirical data showing what happened (what did you see, hear, feel, taste and/or smell). The analytical section will apply concepts to examine the empirical section. The conclusion should take the form of an analysis of learning where you say something about what you figured out through doing this analysis.
My paper should used from two books witch is 1) Nelson; power and everyday practices by Deborah Brock, Rebecca Raby and Mark P.Thomas. 2) Third edition; sociology in everyday life by David A.Karp, William C.Yoels and Barbara H.Vann

“women, work, and globalization”

“women, work, and globalization”
Paper instructions:
Please answer either question 1, or 2.
Question 1. You are designing a newsletter for families on the challenges of balancing work and family life. You may select any population you would like to target, for example, you could do a newsletter for emerging adults who are about to graduate on some of the issues they may be facing as they move into the professional workplace. You should first think of an area of interest to you, and then your potential recipients. Try to think about this as something you could put into a portfolio- so for example, if you are interested in working with families on selecting a child care facility you might use that as your newsletter. Here you are encouraged to do something you would really be able to use at some point.
Question 2. You are designing a study of issues in work and family that you hope will get at the key issues facing today’s families. Consider what you think are the three main issues (hint, your readings thus far should help) and any special issues you might have to consider when doing research in this area. Describe how you would conduct your research and hypothesize about what you think you will find in your results.
Please answer either question 3 or 4
Question 3. Part of our challenge in balancing work and family is that we are a very consumer oriented culture. We like our “stuff” and many of us are good at accumulating “stuff”. There are also many incentives for us to keep purchasing, in fact right after 9-11 we were encouraged to “buy something”. Analyze your own lifestyle and what you could change (you did a bit of this on the discussion board earlier). I am asking you to expand on this, being realistic at the same time. If you made a change, how do you think this would affect your family members? One of the challenges to “downsizing” is that children are especially sensitive to media messages about “stuff”. How would you deal with media messages? You may use what you have learned from The Story of Stuff” to help you answer this question, just be sure you cite it appropriately.

Question 4. You are given the opportunity, in fact are compelled, to go back to
one time period (at least 20 years) in American history and live out your life in that time period. Based on what you have learned about work and family issues, as well as historical information from your own families, pick that time period and develop a rationale for why you choose that time. You may limit yourself to a particular social class, or a particular employer.
Please choose either question 5 or 6..
Question 5. We saw the video on the Bowlings, a limited resource family in the hills of Kentucky. First, define work and family from the Bowlings perspective. Are work and family obligations evenly distributed in this extended family by age, gender, and ability? If you were a member of the family what would they expect of you? How do you think this family represents limited resource families in general? You may use particular characters to illustrate your points if you wish.
Question6. You have decided to seek employment with health and social services in the county seat where the Bowlings live. (Remember this is about 2hours from their homes- you work in the same building as the courthouse). You are planning to assess the extended family living in American Hollow, their strengths and challenges, and then make specific suggestions to the family for improving work and family life. Being realistic, develop an assessment and plan for change for this family.

Emma Larkin’s Finding George Orwell in Burma

Please type and single-space your responses to the following questions, clearly labeling the question being addressed and utilizing standard margins and a 12-point font. Your responses will be based primarily on the Larkin text, along with the chapters by Aung San Suu Kyi (“In Quest of Democracy” and “Freedom from Fear”) and associated class materials (discussions, powerpoints, in-class video, and on-line exercises). Include a citation (any standard format is fine) if you are: a) referring to information gleaned from outside of the Larkin text or Aung San Suu Kyi chapters; b) using a direct quotation from any source. Responses getting high marks will demonstrate the following characteristics: a thorough treatment of the issues raised in the question, well written, tight organization, and thoughtful. The exam is due in class on Monday, March 10th. Late assignments will be penalized one full letter grade per day.
1. For many decades, Burma’s government has been widely considered one of the worst in the world. Unfortunately, many “post-colonial” nations (i.e., nations that were colonized in the past by Western nations but have now been granted independence) have been saddled with corrupt, inept, and tyrannical governments since gaining independence. A thread that weaves its way through Larkin’s text is the similarities between the ways in which the British colonial government ran Burma and the ways in which Burma’s military regime has operated. Because of these similarities, Aung San Suu Kyi has characterized the current period in Burmese history “the second struggle for independence” (the first struggle being, of course, against the British). Using at least five (5) specific examples from the Larkin text, discuss how the military government of Burma has been a sort of ‘reflection’ of the British colonial government that preceded it, in terms of its practices, policies, attitudes, etc. (This response should be about 2/3rds of a page to one page in length; 20 points possible.)
2. Using the Larkin text and the handout “Finding George Orwell in Burma: Some Notes on the Exercise of State Power” as inspiration, discuss some of the ‘tools’ the post-colonial government of Burma has used to exercise power over the people of Burma. Relate the concepts in the handout to specific examples from the Larkin text, as well as class discussion (including the events of 2007 as depicted in the ‘Burma VJ’ viewing). Among others, be sure you include two primary ‘tools’ in your discussion: 1) the concept of fear; Aung San Suu Kyi chose to title her most important book Freedom from Fear. In what ways has the Burmese government utilized fear as a means of controlling the populace?; 2) A central theme of Orwell’s writings was the power of surveillance. Use the term panopticon, as mentioned in Larkin (p.79) and slide #’s 42-46 in the ‘History and Politics in Burma’ Powerpoint presentation, and check out the good entry on “panopticon” in wikipedia (not all wikipedia entries are adequate, but this one is – just type “panopticon” in the search bar and it should be one of the first hits).
Leaving Burma for a moment, in what ways do governments in general (including your own government), powerful corporations, the financial sector, etc. employ fear as a tool of manipulation and control? Include the concept of surveillance/’the panopticon’ in your response. What, if anything, can be done by ordinary folks to fight the power of fear as it is utilized in attempts to control us? (This response should be about 2/3rds of a page to one page in length; 20 points possible)

The process of experimentation and why science uses experimentation

Paper instructions:
Fiirst, on a separate page and in short answer format, address the following questions:
Explain the process of experimentation and why science uses experimentation.
Identify characteristics of a good experiment or experimental design.
How do scientists determine how large a sample is large enough? What factors play into this determination?
Then, referring to you answers to the questions above, complete the following:
Write a hypothesis. (Hint:Make your hypothesis something that is easily testable and which is based on an observation. The clearer your hypothesis, the easier it will be to create an experimental design. Easily testable hypotheses address a single relationship between two factors, are clear and concise, with all terms clearly defined).
Examples of easily testable hypotheses: these are just examples
If the rate of photosynthesis is positively related to temperature, then increasing temperature will increase the rate of oxygen production.
If root growth is related to gravity, then roots will always turn toward the earth regardless of a seed’s orientation.
If hatching of brine shrimp is related to salinity, then the greater the salt concentration, the higher the hatching rate.
If the thickness of annual growth rings in trees is related to annual rainfall, then examining wood samples will reveal correlations between the growth rings and past rainfall for trees in their environments.
Design an experiment to test your hypothesis. Remember you are under no obligation to actually test the experiment. So be creative but make sure the experimental design is sound (i.e. that it controls for random variables, and addresses the hypothesis specifically).
Finally, write a 2 page paper providing:
The hypothesis and prediction(s) of the hypothesis.
How, when, and where the experiment would be set up. Please justify why.
The variables you would need to control for given your hypothesis.
How large a sample size you would need.
The time you think you would need to run the experiment (elapsed time for the experiment’s results to be observable).
The type of data you would collect and how you would go about analyzing it to determine if your hypothesis would be supported. Predict what pattern you think you will see with the collected data and what conclusions you anticipate drawing from these patterns?
How many times the experiment would need to be run to generate sufficient data. Include any other information pertinent to the experiment.
Include relevant sources (i.e. similar studies to yours) supporting why you chose to design your study the way you did (i.e. the length of study, the sample size, the time frame needed to observe a given aspect of the study, etc.)

How can we identify something as a pseudoscience? What characteristics does it have?
Give an example of pseudoscience in the media or in a popular advertisement, and explain why it is considered a pseudoscience.
How would you define ethics?
What ethical issues are of most concern in science? Why?
How might ethics influence the scientific process? Provide examples.
