introduction:
Over the years, corporate social responsibility has been one of the major topics that has grown in importance in the global economy. In many conferences such as Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D) conferences, the topic has been one of the controversial topics and has created heated arguments in various countries worldwide. This is due to the fact that the topic has attracted varied understanding and interpretations where various scholars, researchers and business professionals have come out with different theories, commentaries and concepts to illustrate their points about the topics. While there has been controversy on what the topic embraces, mutually, it has been accepted that corporate social responsibility is the practice that has been or needs to be adopted by businesses that enhances persistent dedication towards ethical and economic development at the same time improving the quality of life of its employees, their families, communities and the global world at large (Lantos, 2001). Therefore, this paper will provide a consistent and comprehensive research on corporate social responsibility for various corporate organizations globally and propose various ways in which the organizations can improve their behaviors as good corporate citizens .
Purpose of this study:
It is worthwhile to note that corporate social responsibility is an important concept in the world today. The fact that a corporate organization is a legal entity with the legal right to enter into a legal contract, terminate a contract, own property, sue and be sued, is that it is actually an artificial person which should ensure a good relationship to the community surrounding it and the society at large. This then makes corporate social responsibility an important subject for any business sustainability in the public domain. Therefore, this research paper will focus on proposing various issues that need to be taken into account mainly in the private sector so as to improve incentives for business action (Galbraith, 1977). It will also demonstrate the Demand for CSR; propose issues and the need for CSR by considering every CSR stakeholder not only in the world at large. To enable a clear understanding, this chapter will entail the theoretical perspective of the CSR, the stakeholders’ perspective, the international perspective, and the firms’ perspective, after which the chapter will discuss the demands of the corporate social responsibility and then finalize with a comprehensive conclusion.
Background information
The core roots of Corporate Social Responsibility extend far before the Second World War. While the paper will not research information from that far, it is important to note the major and important comments made by Dean K. David to the incoming MBA students in Harvard Business School in 1946 is appropriate to recalling in this subject matter. David with a finality exhorted that for the success of any future business, the executives must take heed to the responsibilities that now rest on the leaders of various business managers and leaders today (Spector, 2008). In connection to this, Spector (2008) argues that the roots of the modern Social responsibility can be traced in 1945 to 1960 which are the Cold War earlier years. He claims that David and other advocates who commented on the notion of CSR made use of it and has a means to align the interests of business with the defense of free-market capitalism against the soviet communism danger (p. 78).
The CSR formal definitions started to proliferate in the 1970s where the overall objective was viewed to make emphasis on CSR. This was the year when the Corporate Social responsibility, performance and responsiveness were raised as the center of discussion. According to Murray (1976), what was really essential was not actually that the companies were overlooking the responsibility, but they were responding towards the social environment (p. 95).In trying to enhance the distinction between corporate social responsibility and corporate social responsiveness, Fredric (1978) formalized that while corporate social responsibility emphasizes companies assuming a posture that is socially responsible, CS responsiveness objects on the literal practice of achieving or responding towards society situation (p. 44).
Whereas CSR proceeded with its quest in finding business legitimacy in 2000s, the rise and preoccupation of professional ethics obstructed the continued growth and development of the theme of social responsibility thought there were substantial advances made in Europe and the UK. Dramatically, CSR dominated still in 2000s mainly as the business community was seeking to legitimize and rationalize the various activities it had begun and were continuing. Various corporate businesses became captivated with the notion of sustainable development and this concept became an integral and essential part of all CSR discussions in public today .
Potential research questions
In a bid to enhance comprehension of this topic, the paper will focus and answer the following questions:
a) How should firms act as good corporate citizens?
b) In a bid to mitigate anticipated or existing adverse effects from business activities, how do business Organizations act and how should they act?
c) Do business organizations have a social responsibility that is advanced? If not, how should they advance? If it is advanced how should they improve it further? How should they improve their social context that enables improvement of their shared society business value?
d) What should the business organizations do to increase and advance their innovation to benefit both themselves and the society at large?
e) What is then the demand for CSR to various stakeholders ?
Further, this proposal will focus on proposing various issues that need to be taken into account mainly in the private sector so as to improve incentives for business action. It will also demonstrate the Demand for CSR; propose issues and the need for CSR by considering every CSR stakeholder not only in the world at large.
