Introduction to Transportation

Class name: Introduction to Transportation
Book:
Transportation: A Supply Chain Perspective, 7thED by Coyle, Bardi, Novak
Uncommon Carriers by John Mcphee
Please write one paragraph for my short essay questions(just choose two of below questions) ASAS you can. Your answer is to be written in paragraph form and include specific example:
A) In Uncommon Carriers, John McPhee describes some of the people who keep America’s freight moving over highways, rails, and waterways. Compare the day-to-day jobs of Don Ainsworth(truck driver), Scott Davis (locomotive engineer), and Mel Adams (towboat pilot). What are the positive aspects, as well as the negative aspects of each person’s job? If you had to choose, which one of these three jobs would you select? Why?
B) Thus far this semester we have covered the various modes of transportation found in the United states. Compare pipeline, rail, motor, water, and air transportation addressing length of haul and at least two advantages and two disadvantages for each mode. Additionally, what kinds of freight are carried typically on each mode? Why?
C) In the motor carrier industry, an important distinction is made between truckload(TL) and less than truckload (LTL) carriers. Compare and contrast the TL segment of the motor carrier industry with the LTL segment in terms of infrastructure, cost structure, market structure and operating characteristics. In your comparison, name at least 3 current LTL and 3 current TL firms.
