complex disputes

Patrick Cleary (2007) talks about the importance of context in complex disputes, relating his answer the situation in the Middle East. Not all disputes are as complex as this however the question arises as to how best to deal with consideration of the context of a dispute – what is relevant, where should the boundaries be drawn?
In discussing this question a conference at Program on Negotiation at Harvard law School asked the questions:
Can context be organised into categories?
What might those categories be?
Considering the dispute you may have observed, respond to these questions.

Criteria:
Demonstrated ability to:
Provide a focused contribution to the group discussion supported by internet research;
Demonstrate understanding of key issues from pertinent literature;
Analyse and synthesise material;
Develop valid arguments supported by evidence;
Contribute to an online discussion in a manner which demonstrates engagement with group discourse, clarity of expression, adherence to word limit, absence of typographic errors;
Submit contributions to an appropriate professional standard; consistent referencing, clear and consistent expression, spelling and punctuation, adherence to word limit.
