Discussion 3: Preserving Biodiversity
Biodiversity is essential to the resiliency of ecosystems, yet part of the human impact on the planet has been a drastic reduction in biodiversity. The change is taking place all over the world; yet the most rapid changes are taking place in developing countries. In this Discussion, you will address the importance of biodiversity, the causes of biodiversity loss, and what is being done about it.

To prepare for this Discussion:
• Reader Chapters 5 and 8 of the course text, Environmental Science.
• Consider the different kinds of biodiversity and why each is important to the survival of various ecosystems.
• Reflect on the efforts humans are making to preserve biodiversity.
With these thoughts in mind:
Post by Day 3, 2–3 paragraphs analyzing the effectiveness of various interventions to preserve biodiversity. Your post should include the following: (two different answers for each question)
• Brief examples of genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity
• Two examples of how human action is reducing biodiversity
• The efforts being made to preserve biodiversity by integrating the principles of conservation
• Your assessment of those efforts: Which do you think will do the most good? Which do you think need more work before they can be successful?
• Ask a probing question.
• Share an insight from having read your classmate’s posting.
• Offer and support an opinion.
• Validate an idea with your own experience.
• Make a suggestion.
