Answer two of the questions below

Paper instructions:
Answer two (2) out of the following three (3) questions in essay style. Provide examples from readings, lectures, and/or videos to support your answers. There are no page limits to your answers, but as a general guideline 3 to 5 pages for each question should br sufficient.

(1) While all of the world cultures have a practice of marriage the details of each vary considerably. Discuss the sacred and profane issues that are involved with marriage and the numerous variations that are seen among different societies. Hint: You might want to structure your answer on the basis of my lecture on the nine variations of marriage practices.

(2) Generally speaking in most societies around the world sexual relationships outside of marriage are strongly prohibited. From an anthropological standpoint, however, the rules against outside sex may be circumvented in different ways. Discuss some of the ways in which societies legitimize certain outside sexual practices and the ways individuals in these societies justify their actions. Hint: discuss the idea of survival sex as opposed to prostitution.

(3) Same sex attraction and behavior are not necessarily coupled. While attraction is biologically based, behavior depends upon cultural standards and permissiveness. Discuss this nature/ nurture issue and the decoupling of same sex sexuality from homosexuality as it was discussed in class. Provide examples from different societies where, in their view, "homosexuality" is not "homosexual." Hint You might wish to use the framework I provided in lecture where I discussed 4 or 5 instances where same sex behavior was not considered to be homosexual by the individuals who performed the act.
