It can be from any Modern movement or style. The Modern work should be of similar subject and medium as the earlier work. (still-life to still-life, architecture to architecture, portrait to portrait, sculpture to sculpture, etc.)
Compare the similarities and differences between the two chosen works of art. While comparing these two works, consider differences in context and content that would exist between the two time-frames. Consider the audience each work would have been done for. How are the two similar subjects treated differently? How are they similar? How is the Modern work different from the older version, and why? How did the different cultures and/or historical periods affect the treatment of similar subjects? Consider technological developments and/or skill changes. Social, cultural, and/or world-view differences?
Include specific information about the artists (if known), culture/style/movement, dates and medium. Use the formal language of art as much as possible in describing and comparing these two works. For the most part this assignment should be in your own words, reflecting your own thoughts and responses. An appreciation of art can be informed by historical detail and facts, but ultimately it comes down to personal choices and personal dialogue.
Include Xerox/photocopies of the two works being discussed. Conclude by describing your personal opinion and response to the two works.
This written assignment should be 3-4 pages long, NOT including the visual examples.
