Compare and contrast one twentieth-century piece from before 1945 and one piece from after
1945. Almost any pair of pieces CAN work, but your life will be much easier if you choose
pieces because they have an interesting similarity. Do not choose pieces that are required on
the syllabus. Here are some strategies:
* two pieces by the same composer: e.g. Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms and Requiem
Canticles; or Copland’s Billy the Kid and Inscape; or Edgard Varèse’s Ameriques and Déserts
* two pieces in the same genre: e.g. String Quartets by Béla Bartók and Elliott Carter; or
Violin Concertos by Alban Berg and Philip Glass; or one movement from each of two settings of
the Catholic Mass
* two pieces that seem to have an interesting similarity in subject matter: e.g. Arthur
Honegger’s Pacific 231 and Steve Reich’s Different Trains; or excerpts from Messiaen, Vingt
Regards and John Adams, El Niño
