This is a case study assignment in which you need to decide on the steps and techniques you need to employ to conduct a special study looking at the presence of Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in liver cells of a patient suffering from a liver tumour. You must include method of collecting tissue, fixation, processing and as many types of techniques that can be used for the study
A patient has come to the hospital suffering from problems with his liver. The patient has had a colon carcinoma removed 3 years ago. The liver was slightly swollen and an MRI examination revealed the presence of a dense mass in the middle of the right lobe. The doctors suspect the metastasis and recurrence of the colon cancer. They consult you to check what they should do to help you reach an accurate histopathological diagnosis.
Questions to answer in you assignment
1. What method is most suitable to remove adequate tissue for histopathological examination and what is the most reliable way of making sure you get the correct tissue needed?
2. What methods of fixation and processing are most suitable for the studies you are thinking of performing?
3. What possible techniques could you perform on the sample of tissue obtained to help in the microscopical examination of the tissue keeping in mind that one of the methods you use need to confirm the presence or absence of Carcinoembryonic antigen that is present in the colon cancer. What other staining methods can or should you use as well?
You must explain the reasons for your choices and the underlying principles of the methods and techniques that you chose to perform.
It should be well referenced to the Harvard style
